What about students who do not have the ICT skills?

  • run a familiarisation workshop for all students at the beginning of the course and have a ‘reserve’ or ‘mop up’ session a few days later for latecomers
  • have ‘frequently asked questions’ (like these) as an essential part of the environment. These are a popular and generally well used feature of many websites, and can obviate the need to deal individually with a number of student queries.
  • be prepared for students to make mistakes with the use of the technology (for example using e-mail instead of the discussion forum) and gently encourage better practice by carefully monitoring use for the first two weeks
  • include your general university e-mail address for the course tutor(s) on the welcome page as contact points in case of need, for example ‘If you have any questions about this web please contact…’
